How to use one-way exclusion funnels to remove Johns Creek skunks without trapping them
As humans take over more and more of their natural habitat, Georgia skunks are becoming quite a nuisance. Their only source of food, in urban areas, is discarded food that we throw out. It is important for them to live close to a source of food. This means that they often build dens under the homes of people, or in garages. This can cause a problem as skunks can carry a multitude of diseases. These diseases are transmitted through bites or saliva. It can also be transmitted through feces.
Where to get an exclusion funnel
One-way exclusion funnels are a safe and inexpensive way of getting rid of Johns Creek skunks. The funnels are available from online stores or hardware stores. You need to make sure to get one that is large enough to contain a skunk. They come in more than one size and it is easy to order the wrong one. Make sure that you check the measurements.
What does it look like?
A one-way exclusion funnel resembles a cage and is attached to the opening where the Georgia skunk is gaining access. It looks like a funnel. It has a small opening which leads to a large cage. It is made of strong steel, making it impossible to claw or chew through. It has flaps on the side that are used to fasten it to the side of the building.
How does it work?
You need to ensure all of the entry points have been closed. Johns Creek skunks usually have up to five entry points to their den. This will leave only one option for the skunk. The small part of the cage is placed against the hole that the skunk uses. You will need to wait for the skunk to leave the burrow. This will usually happen at night. Once the skunk is inside the cage, it will not be able to get out. You will need to check that there are no babies inside the burrow. If there are, you will need to remove them carefully and relocate them. They will be unable to look after themselves and will starve without their mom.
Relocating them
Before you relocate the skunks, it is advisable to phone a wildlife rehabilitation center. They will be able to tell you where you can safely release the Georgia skunks. If they are ill they will nurse them back to health before releasing them back into the wild.
