Johns Creek Wildlife Education: What If You Are Bitten By A Bat?

If you are concerned about being bitten by a Johns Creek bat, you will be happy to know that the chances are reasonably small. That being said, you still need to know what to do if you receive a bat bite since you will want to seek treatment from your doctor as soon as possible.

Identifying Bat Bites
One of the biggest issues with Georgia bat bites is that people who are bitten are not always aware of them. This is because most bats have very small teeth, meaning that a bite mark will disappear very quickly. This means that if you wake up with a bat in your room, you may be have been bitten and not realize it.

Treat Your Wounds
As with any other wild animal bite, you will want to clean a bite from a Johns Creek bat right away and stop the bleeding if there is any. Wash the area thoroughly using soap and water. Then, make an appointment with your doctor for as soon as possible.

Visiting The Doctor
You always need to see the doctor or a medical professional following a Georgia bat bite because of the risk of rabies. Although not all bats have rabies, it is possible to contract it from bats if you are bitten by an infected one. The chances of getting rabies, particularly from a bat, are small, but if you can’t determine whether or not the bat in question has it, your doctor will recommend anti-rabies treatment since the condition is fatal once it fully develops.

Catch The Bat
One major difference of being bitten by a Johns Creek bat as opposed to another type of animal is that you are strongly encouraged to catch the bat in question if possible. This allows it to be sent for medical testing so experts can determine whether or not it had rabies. If the results come back quickly, this can determine whether you need the rabies treatment. Even if you have already had the anti-rabies treatment by the time the results come back, the test will let you know whether you need to pay close attention for signs of rabies. While it is strongly encouraged to catch the bat for testing, do not try to do so if it puts you or others at risk of more bites. You may also be able to hire someone to try to catch the bat for you, depending on the situation.
